Janet Echelman's Floating Sculptures

Sculpture doesn’t have to possess a finite set of rules or limits, at least not according to some ground-breaking pioneers in the evolving world of art and design.

One notable persona who leads the notion that art in itself can be much more than just a singular static idea, is Janet Echelman from Tampa, Florida. A recipient of notable fellowships from Harvard University and the Guggenheim Institute, Janet’s works have been publicly applauded as dynamic, responsive and ever-changing examples of how art can defy categorization and evolve into large-scale immersive experiences that viewers themselves can leap into.

Most of her vibrantly moving art pieces are created with cutting edge technology, but the ideas behind them are drawn meticulously from ancient styles of cultural craftsmanship and handiwork. They contort and shift gracefully when exposed to the imminent forces of our natural surroundings, such as light, air and water.

Janet’s monumental works have been featured all over the world, and she herself has given inspirational talks about art at events like the Ted conference of 2011. Her biography, history of works and other articles can be seen on her website; www.echelman.com, which showcases a majority of her building-sized works on its landing page.
